The Short Answer
Stay near Interlaken Ost, the east station. Every train up to Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen, Wengen and the Jungfraujoch starts there, and so do the boats on Lake Brienz. The Höheweg, the long avenue between the two stations facing the open meadow and the Jungfrau, has the grand hotels. Our pick is the Victoria-Jungfrau, right on it.
Stay near Interlaken West for the shops and restaurants of the town center and the Lake Thun boats. If you would rather wake up in the mountains than ride up to them, look at Grindelwald or the car-free villages of Wengen and Mürren instead.
Interlaken's Areas Compared
| Area | Best for | To Interlaken Ost | Downsides |
|---|---|---|---|
| Near Interlaken Ost | Early mountain trains, Lake Brienz boats | 1–5 min walk | Fewer restaurants than the center |
| Höheweg | Grand hotels, Jungfrau views over the meadow | 5–15 min walk | Busy with tour groups in summer |
| Near Interlaken West | Shops, restaurants, Lake Thun boats | A few minutes by train or bus | One more step to the mountain trains |
| Grindelwald or Wengen instead | Waking up in the mountains | 20–45 min by train | Higher prices, fewer rainy-day options |
