Where to Stay in Zermatt

Zermatt is a car-free village at the foot of the Matterhorn. Where you stay decides how far you walk to the station and the lifts, and whether you see the mountain from your room.

The Short Answer

Stay in central Zermatt, between the station and the church, if this is your first visit. You can walk to the trains, the Gornergrat railway, the shops and most restaurants. In winter, skiers do best near a lift: the Matterhorn Express gondola at the south end of the village, or the Sunnegga funicular near the center. Our pick is Matterhorn FOCUS, next to the Matterhorn Express, with an electric car that collects you from the station.

Stay on the Winkelmatten side, across the river, for quiet and Matterhorn views. Stay up on the mountain at Riffelalp or the Gornergrat for the most dramatic setting, as long as you don't mind depending on the railway in the evening. Only stay in Täsch, the village where the road ends, if you are driving and want the cheapest option.
