The Lugano lakefront promenade with Monte Brè across the bay

Where to Stay in Lugano

Lugano is Switzerland with an Italian accent: palm trees, piazzas and a lake framed by steep green mountains. The town climbs from the lakefront up to the station, so where you stay decides how many hills you walk.

The Short Answer

Stay on the lakefront in the center, along the Riva between Piazza della Riforma and the Paradiso side. You can walk to the old town, the boats and the lakeside park, and the views across to Monte San Salvatore and Monte Brè are right outside. Our pick is Hotel Walter au Lac, where every room faces the lake.

Stay near the station, up the hill above the old town, for cheaper rooms and easy trains, with a funicular down to the center. Stay at Castagnola, east along the shore at the foot of Monte Brè, for a quiet villa-style stay away from the crowds.
