Where to Stay in Lauterbrunnen, Wengen and Mürren

The Lauterbrunnen Valley has four places to stay: Lauterbrunnen on the valley floor, and three car-free villages on the cliffs above it. Wengen and Mürren have the views and the hotels; Lauterbrunnen has the trains and the lower prices.

The Short Answer

Stay in Wengen, a car-free village on a sunny shelf above the valley with views straight up to the Jungfrau. It has more hotels and restaurants than Mürren, and trains run down to Lauterbrunnen and up to Kleine Scheidegg and the Jungfraujoch. Our pick is the Beausite Park Hotel, with balconies facing the Jungfrau and an indoor pool.

Stay in Mürren, on the opposite cliff, for an even higher, quieter village and the Schilthorn cable car. Stay in Lauterbrunnen on the valley floor for the lowest prices and the easiest train connections, under the Staubbach Falls. Gimmelwald, one cable car stop below Mürren, is a tiny farming hamlet with almost no services.

Car-Free Villages: Luggage and Arrival

  • Wengen: you can't drive there. Park in Lauterbrunnen (spaces are limited) and take the train up, a ride of about 10 to 15 minutes. Several hotels collect you from Wengen station, including the Beausite Park and the Regina.
  • Mürren: also car-free. Take the cable car from Lauterbrunnen to Grütschalp and the small train along the cliff (about 20 minutes), or the bus to Stechelberg and the cable car up via Gimmelwald (about 30 minutes). The new Stechelberg–Mürren cable car is billed as the steepest in the world, and Stechelberg has more than 1,500 parking spaces.
  • Luggage: SBB's luggage service can send your bags ahead by rail, and in Mürren a local company, Stäger Transporte, delivers to hotels. Hotel Eiger in Mürren picks up your bags at the station if you call from the train.
  • Seasonal closures: in 2026 the Mürren–Allmendhubel funicular is closed until 11 December. The Stechelberg–Mürren cable car closes again for maintenance from 26 April to 7 May 2027, with a replacement bus. Several of our Wengen and Mürren picks close from mid-October or late October until mid-December.
  • Lauberhorn races: Wengen hosts the Lauberhorn World Cup ski races from 15 to 17 January 2027. Book early, or pick other dates if you want a quiet stay.
