The Short Answer
For most families, the easiest trip is Lucerne plus the Jungfrau region, flying in and out of Zurich. Lucerne has boats, a walkable Old Town and the Swiss Museum of Transport, and the Jungfrau region has trains, cable cars and easy walks. In the mountains, base yourself in Interlaken for the most hotels, playgrounds and rainy-day options. Our pick there is the Victoria-Jungfrau, which has a kids' club.
For more mountain and less town, stay in Grindelwald, or in car-free Wengen or Mürren, where children can wander streets without traffic. For older kids who ski, Zermatt and St. Moritz have hotels with kids' clubs and ski schools.
The Best Family Bases Compared
| Base | Why kids like it | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Interlaken | Two lakes, boats, easy trains to the mountains | Busy in summer |
| Grindelwald | The First gondola, playgrounds, sledging in winter | Hilly walks from some hotels |
| Wengen & Mürren | No cars, trains to the door, big views | Carrying luggage; many hotels close in spring and fall |
| Lucerne | Boats, the Old Town, mountain trips | Busy with day-trippers in summer |
| Zermatt | The Matterhorn, skiing, e-taxis | Expensive; long train ride to get there |
| St. Moritz | Lakes, skiing, kids' clubs | Many hotels open only in season |
