Where to Stay in St. Moritz and the Engadin

St. Moritz is two towns on one lake: Dorf, the upper village with the palace hotels and the shops, and Bad, the flatter, cheaper part by the lake shore. Pontresina, a few minutes away, is the quieter alternative.

The Short Answer

Stay in St. Moritz Dorf, the upper village, for the palace hotels, the shops and the funicular up to the Corviglia ski area. It sits on the hillside, a steep walk or short bus ride above the station and the lake. Our pick is the Kulm Hotel, where St. Moritz winter tourism began, which includes a ski pass with every night.

Stay in St. Moritz Bad, by the lake at the southern end, for lower prices, flat walks and cross-country trails. Stay in Pontresina, about 5 km east, for a quieter village with its own grand hotels and good access to the Bernina Pass and the Diavolezza ski area. Many of the big hotels open only for the winter and summer seasons, so check dates before you plan.
